You Never Know How Loud the World Can Be Until You Have a Sound-Sensitive Child

8 years ago Scarlett Newton
For well over a year, I've had a fear of public bathrooms. This anxiety stems not from the cleanliness factor or having to do one's business in a public setting, but is exclusively based on their noise. Hand dryers, automatic toilets, echoing acoustics, and loud talkers have all turned an average bathroom experience into one that is fraught with fear and frustration for my sound-sensitive son. Part of the reason noises are scary for him is that he doesn't know where they're coming from or what they're doing. You have no idea how loud the world can be until you're with someone who is affected by the volume. My almost-3-year-old little boy, normally gregarious and accommodating, turns into an unrecognizable version of himself when faced with loud noises. Car washes, sirens, door bells, and all trains are all things that I previously didn't think twice about until he started having a visceral reaction to them. Only in the last two weeks have I finally ..

It Is OK to Take Antidepressants — They Helped Save My Life

Though I was formally diagnosed with chronic depression at the end of 2015, I was told I had most likely been facing mental illness for most of my life. I didn't disagree — after looking back over the reel of events in my head, I could see these spans of darkness I had buried deep in my memory archives. In a way, it was heartbreaking. Remember that one antidepressant commercial where a woman walks around with a little cloud over her head? Yeah. I felt like that often. Everything was going well, but on the inside, it wasn't always. When we care for our bodies and minds, we are that much more able to spread light to those around us. I had been to therapy before, and quite regularly. Through talk therapy, group workshop sessions, dietitian appointments, and even yoga therapy, I battled a 10-year-long eating disorder, which we knew was coupled with my mood swings. I was — and am — a huge believer in the power of therapy to help in really any life situation, even if you don&#03..

Attention, Parents! Here’s What You Need to Know Before Putting a Blanket in an Infant’s Crib

8 years ago Lily Garner
With the wealth of cute, cuddly baby blankets on the market, it can be difficult not to put one on your sleeping baby. But the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends parents not to put any pillows, quilts, comforters, or other soft or loose bedding in their infants' sleep areas as a precaution against sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). While the risk of SIDS decreases as your baby gets older, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that the majority of sleep-related infant deaths it has data on have been attributable to suffocation involving pillows, quilts, and extra bedding. "Pillows, quilts, comforters, sheepskins, and other soft surfaces are hazardous when placed under the infant or left loose in the infant's sleep area and can increase SIDS risk up to fivefold independent of sleep position," the AAP explains. 43712098 Although there isn't any research that indicates when it's 100 percent safe to have such objects in your child's bed, ..
