Olympic Figure Skater Tara Lipinski Tells Us What She REALLY Thought About I, Tonya

It may have been a while since American figure skater Tara Lipinski competed in the Winter Olympics, but her accomplishments (she won a gold medal at the 1998 Nagano Olympics!) on and off the ice will always be remembered. Today, Tara is NBC's prime-time figure skating TV Analyst, and she'll be commentating at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

Before the Olympics kick off, POPSUGAR had the chance to speak with Tara about her experiences as a gold medalist and what we should expect from the figure skaters in this year's competition (hint: watch out for Nathan Chen). Being such an athletic icon herself, we couldn't help but ask her what she thought about I, Tonya, the riveting movie about Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding.

"I thought it was a brilliantly acted movie," Tara gushed. "Allison Janney was incredible, and so was Margot Robbie."

Tara says she thoroughly enjoyed how entertaining the film was, and who can blame her? It was one of the most talked about movies of the year! She did have one important thing to say, though.

Tara was actually at the 1994 National Championships where much of I, Tonya took place. She was only 11 years old at the time, so she was "skating in a different rink," but Tara has been to enough National Championships to know what the experience is like firsthand. "[Tonya] had a really difficult upbringing and relationships and traumatic experiences that people can sympathize with," she admits. "But at the end of the day, so do many, many athletes from many different sports, and that doesn't mean that you have to lose sportsmanship."

"I think that especially at the Olympic level, it should be a fair game," she concludes. You can't really argue with that.
