MoviePass told us back in January that they pulled less than 2% of AMC’s locations because the chain didn’t want to collaborate with the monthly movie ticket service. MoviePass was seeking a cut of concessions and ticket sales as they drove business to AMC’s venues. You can read the statement made by Ted Farnsworth, CEO of MoviePass parent Helios & Matheson back in January here.
According to a MoviePass insider today they claim that the kibosh on AMC wasn’t so much of a ban, rather a test of their consumer ticket-buying habits. Essentially, by turning off the spigot, MoviePass got to see how that impacted moviegoer traffic to other competitors and claims that they saw a spike in overall business of 23% in the four days following the AMC block.

HMNY, MoviePass’ parent company, closed at $2.98 today, -16%.
Variety first had the news about about MoviePass’ fence mending with AMC. MoviePass counts 2 million monthly subscribers.
