“That is obviously not the case any more.Trump getting elected while you’re writing a fictional show about the White House really isn’t fair,” Kimmel said. “It’s like what would happen to Game of Thrones if they suddenly discovered that there are dragons flying around.”
Kimmel, who devoted his entire program to all-things Scandal, called it “the first time a TV show ended because the world jumped the shark, instead of the other way around.”
While some times it was hard to tell who was good and who was bad on the show, the “one thing always certain was who was the President of the United States of America.”
Roll clip of various characters saying “The President of the United States,” ending with Donald Trump saying, “I’m the President of the United States.”
“I know it had a sad ending. The last one was a little hard to believe. But it’s true,” Kimmel said.
Kerry Washington and Shonda Rhimes talked about meeting for the first time. Rhimes insisted she knew almost immediately she wanted Washington to play Olivia Pope, though it may have been hard to tell since, when she gets excited, her face goes blank, because she’s writing in her head, she explained. This took Washington by surprise because, she said, she knew others who had auditioned for the role and “black girls weren’t getting this material in this town” at the time.
“Now there are lots of opportunities!” Washington beamed, calling Scandal “like the diamond in the rough that is Hollywood.”
Finale includes an original song written for the show by Stevie Wonder, which Rhimes called a life-changing experience.
She declined to explain what was up with the portrait of Olivia Pope in the National Portrait Gallery at the end of the finale meant she had become President of the United States or First Lady. The script was intended to leave it unclear, though she insists it’s crystal clear to her.
