Tarantino said that the pic takes place in LA in 1969 during the counterculture explosion and “block by block” this summer he’ll take LA back to that era.
“It takes place during the 1969 Hollywood era at the height of the counterculture explosion, at the time of the hippie revolution” said the Oscar-wining filmmaker.
“During the summer, little by little, block by block, we’ll be transforming Los Angeles in the psychedelic Hollywood of 1969,” exclaimed Tarantino. He shared with the crowd that he was 7 years old in 1969 and that the last time he shot this era was with Jackie Brown, though the pic’s vibe is closer to Pulp Fiction.
A sizzle reel at the onset showed an artistic portrayal of his canon with titles like Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, with the final shot being a representation of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Brad Pitt and DiCaprio. Margot Robbie’s name was not listed.
Tarantino called the pairing of Pitt and DiCaprio akin to Robert Redford and Paul Newman. DiCaprio said “it’s hard to talk about a movie you haven’t made yet” but he’s very excited to get back to work with Tarantino after Django Unchained.
Tarantino reminded the crowd that he too is an exhibitor with his Beverly Cinema and praised the owners present for their hard work, and continually offering “the theatrical experience outside the living room where it belongs with audience reactions.”
