UFC Fighter Conor McGregor Sought By Police After Barclays Melee

Conor McGregor isn’t only a dangerous man inside the Octagon, as he proved in a rampage on Thursday at the Barclays Center in New York (see video below).

McGregor and his posse were apparently enraged by the presence of UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was at the arena for a press conference touting an upcoming fight, UFC 223, set for Saturday.

At the end of the press conference, Nurmagomedov was exiting when McGregor and friends attacked them. The NYPD are now looking to question the Irish UFC champ, who potentially could be charged with assault and criminal mischief.

McGregor is best known for his battle last year with boxer Floyd Mayweather, a brief transition to boxing for McGregor that earned him an estimated $30 million to $75 million (Mayweather, the bout’s winner, scored an estimated $100 million).

The stakes were a lot less on Thursday at the Barclays Center

“Conor went bananas and put a beating on the van that we were in looking for Khabib,” said fighter Michael Chiesa’s coach, Rick Little, to the MMAJunkie blog. “A million security guards had to restrain him. Mike’s cut up now. He’s got marks on him, for sure. I don’t think too serious. Everything happened so fast, it was just like we got jumped.”

A video on the scene shows McGregor hurling a dolly at a van and smashing one of its front windows. McGregor was also captured throwing a metal barrier and metal garbage can around the lot.

The incident resulted in one victim being taken to the hospital with a head wound.

McGregor has a rivalry with Nurmagomedov that goes back to UFC 205 in 2016. But the fight also comes a day after the UFC head said he was stripping McGregor of his lightweight championship belt and awarding it to the winner of this weekend’s fight between Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway.

Some cynics – including, reportedly, the police – believe the incident may have been part of pre-fight hype.
