Speaking at a White House lunch with Baltic diplomats, Trump said the military will patrol the southern border until his wall is finished. That’s the wall Trump campaigned on having Mexico pay for that he now wants Congress to fund – so far without much luck.
“We have very bad laws for our border and we are going to be doing some things,” Trump said, winding up to his big announcement. “I spoke with Gen. Mattis, we’re going to do some things militarily, until we can have a wall and proper security – we’re going to be guarding our border with the military.”
“That’s a big step,” Trump said, for reporters in the room who might have missed that.
“We cannot have people flowing into our country illegally, disappearing, and, by the way, never showing up for court,” he added.
As he had done with his Tuesday morning tweet-storm, Trump blamed Obama.
“President Obama made changes that basically created no border,” he said, calling it a “catch and release” policy.
